Often, when the final years are upon the elder, they are left in the care of a violent, selfish, resentful adult child. The elder may continue to work, provide food, housing and all expenses while their offspring does nothing.
The elder may beg the adult child to stop using, but as long as the elder provides for all their needs, there is no incentive for them to change.
Sometimes the elder uses drugs with the adult child.
Sometimes it was the elder who started using drugs with them as a child.
Often the adult child steals valuables from the elder to support addictions or lifestyles. The elder will not press charges due to shame or embarrassment. Elders/parents don't want the adult child to get "into trouble with the law" so the elder/parent blames the person for buying stolen stuff!
Not holding the adult child accountable harms all of society.
Elders often are "chi-ult" themselves, who suppress their own secret trauma. It is only when the elder heals their past can they help their offspring move past theirs.
