Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is the use of words to hurt feelings. The old saying, "take them down a peg or two" is designed to undermine a child's growing self-confidence.

Family Abuse:
  • Emotional rejection
  • Withhold emotional support
  • Emotional void
  • Emotional abandonment
  • Open favoritism
  • Picked on
  • Forbid emotional expression
  • Discourage learning, exploring
  • Witness emotional abuse of loved ones
  • Forbid emotional expression
Outside Abuse:
  • Neighbors and peers call child names
  • Neighborhood rejection
  • Make fun of child's poverty
  • Make fun of obvious child abuse injuries
  • Putdown by peers of intelligence
  • Teased about being a foster kids
  • Tease about parent in jail
  • Laughed at; made fun of; poked fun at; putdowns
