The packet will contain a large paper sheet.  It will contain many bags and envelopes to hold various clothing or small objects such as hair samples.  Glass slides are provided to collect and preserve fluids such as semen, saliva and blood.

Other small bags will contain fingernail clippings or debris collected from under the fingernail. Each piece of evidence collected is carefully placed in its own envelope and sealed.  The contents of each enveloped is noted on the outside. Each envelop is then initialed, dated and timed stamped and placed in the large rape kit envelop.

As the exam continues, each envelop is filled with a piece of evidence and sealed.

After the rape exam is completed the sheet is folded and placed in the envelope.  The rape kit package is sealed, dated and time stamped.

From the moment the rape kit is first unsealed, until the evidence is admitted into court, this package must be properly collected and accounted for by a process called the Chain of Evidence.
